There is so much to learn about inquiry and during this week’s class, we were able to get a glimpse into this incredible type of learning! Trevor Mackenzie joined our class and shared useful information about inquiry-based learning. The idea of inquiry has been a prominent theme throughout my second year of the teacher education program; however, I did not realize all the different aspects related to this type of learning.
Something that really stood out to me after this week’s class is that there are so many different types of inquiry. I was not previously aware of this and did not realize inquiry can be scaffolded in so many ways. The four types of inquiry we learned about were structured inquiry, controlled inquiry, guided inquiry, and free inquiry. Each of these types of inquiry-based learning can be scaffolded, which can help students learn with a gradual release of responsibility from the teacher and an increase of agency. Learning about the 4 types of inquiry was really helpful and it can assist with my future lesson planning as a teacher!
I really enjoyed Trevor Mackenzie’s presentation. It opened my eyes to various options of inquiry and the potential it can hold in the classroom. I look forward to learning more about inquiry in the future, as well as growing my knowledge by delving into some of the resources Trevor provided to us! Inquiry-based learning is an incredible way to teach students and I cannot wait to implement this in my future classroom.
