In the classroom, a lot of students view struggling as an obstacle. If they are having trouble with a math idea or not understanding a concept, this can be viewed as a setback or “not being smart enough.” However, through this course, I have learned that struggle is necessary for learning. If students are not struggling, they are not being challenged. The most important thing is that they overcome this struggle and learn how to effectively demonstrate their knowledge after working on their challenges. At my tutoring job, I was reminded by a fellow tutor of the importance of emphasizing struggle to students. Making mistakes is good and learning from those mistakes will help students understand the concept more in-depth. If students understand a skill right away, they are not learning. It is so important to emphasize the importance of struggle to students and share that it is GOOD to make mistakes when learning. This can help students with confidence in the math classroom and limit discouragement if they get things wrong. So, constantly remind students that STRUGGLE IS GOOD!
