Storybooks are a great way to share important concepts with students in an engaging way. Throughout the term, we talked about a few books that can be used to discuss math concepts and illustrate cross-curricular connections. I love the idea of incorporating storybooks into math lessons to make learning more engaging and enjoyable for the students! Here are a couple of my favourite books we discussed throughout the term.

“First Grade Takes a Test,” by Miriam Cohen.

This book talks about the process of taking a test and the impact that testing can have on students. It highlights the fact that a test does not define how smart you are, nor does it define other important components of your life, such as how kind you are. It is a great message to share with students and it would be fun to include in a primary math class!

“If the World Were a Village,” by David J. Smith

This story informs children about various areas around the world to inspire them how to be better global citizens. It includes numerous cross-curricular connections, such as different languages, traditions, and practices around the world. Furthermore, it includes math concepts, such as discussing ratios and number comparisons. It would be a great storybook to include in a cross-curricular lesson with social studies and math!
