The following videos helped me discover the importance of positive relationships in the classroom and how to consider approaching them.

As I mentioned throughout my portfolio, my teaching philosophy is centred around the importance of creating strong relationships and making students feel safe. This video explains the science behind positive relationships and the power these hold in the classroom. These processes can be very simple, such as a smile, a joke, or a reminder. However, they make a huge difference in both a PHE environment and in the normal classroom.

While doing research for an inquiry assignment last term, I found this video on microcorrections. This put a lot of things in perspective for me, and it demonstrated the importance of being cautious when making comments in the classroom. The video explains that if you receive positive comments, you will view yourself in a positive light. However, if you receive negative comments, this can affect your self-image. Sometimes, it is so easy to give microcorrections to students throughout the day, such as “don’t run into the gym,” or “stop being so disruptive while I am explaining instructions.” However, it is critical to shift these comments and say them in a positive way that promotes growth to help students create a positive self-image.
